IntorductionHydrostatic bearings are well known in industrial and
academic community. This technology was discovered at
ends of XIX century, highlighting between first
applications the guide system presented in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1878. This hydrostatic system named “Ice Railroad” supported a heavy metallic structure
of several tones, and the force of only one person was enough to move it. The null friction appreciated in this demonstrator (main feature of hydrostatic lubrication) is due to moving parts of the mechanism are not in direct contact, being the
pressurised lubricant which carries the forces. Moreover the negligible friction, the rest of mechanical characteristics (high precision and accuracy, elevated
dampness and load capacity, smoothness in its movements, zero wear,…) are very appropriated for high precision machine tool applications.
Machine tool’s sector introduced in the middle 1960’s
the use of this guide system. Due to required precision, grinding machines started with this technology, and even nowadays, the main use of hydrostatic systems is
in this field.......
